KARS SÜVARİ TABYA RESTORASYONU

Project Type : Conservation
Employer: Kars Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry

Süvari Tabyası is located in Kars Province, Ortakapı Neighborhood, Block 320, Plot 2. There is Kars stream in the north of the building, Erzurum-Kars road in the east, and a park built by the Municipality in the north garden. The redoubt structure is buried in the ground, only the northern façade is exposed. The Kars War Veterans and Martyrs Museum structure (single storey) and the Unknown Soldier Monument are located on the same parcel with the redoubt. The structure was registered with the decision no:201 of Erzurum Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Regional Board, in 25.01.1990. Süvari Tabyası was first built by the Shah of Iran II Tahmasb during the occupation of Kars in 1722 to break the resistance in and around the castle. The structure was built together with the Bloody Redoubt in the form of land fortification. The redoubt, which was used for military purposes until 1950, was then left to the municipality. It is understood from the information obtained from the local people and old photographs that the building was once used as a briquette workshop. It has been learned from the local people that it was used as a cold storage depot until recently. The municipality made the landscaping of the bastion in 1999-2000 and opened it to tourism as a city park with the courtyard in front (north).
